Guidelines for Contributors
LOGOS is interested in articles from and about the professions of the book world which illustrate in some way the underlying unity, common cause or conflicting interests of those who write, edit, manufacture, publish, disseminate, preserve and read books, journals and the electronic media.
LOGOS is international and inter-cultural. Articles which help to bridge gaps -- for example between academia and business; between the developing and developed worlds; or between books and the electronic media -- are especially welcome.
A typical LOGOS article covers some history, some personal experience, some critical analysis and a view of the future, not necessarily in that order or in equal proportions. Length can vary according to subject. We have published pieces ranging from 2,000 to 9,000 words. LOGOS is neither a scholarly nor a commercial journal. It is essentially a forum through which professionals communicate.
We set a lot of store on readability and seek to draw our readers into subjects they might not normally explore. We welcome, indeed seek, a wide variety of individual styles, as well as strong opinions leading to debate, from around the world.
The important qualification for a LOGOS contributor is to be an authority on one's own subject. The Editor corresponds with contributors to help with the development of manuscripts, some from scratch and some from papers or talks presented to local or specialized audiences. While we publish in English, we are happy to receive manuscripts in any language and to arrange for translation. Our readership is worldwide and as diverse as the topics we cover.
As a not-for-profit organization, LOGOS does not pay fees to contributors. The Editors and the Editorial Board are also honorary. The subscription income is devoted to covering production and marketing expenses.
We request that contributors grant LOGOS the right to publish their articles in print and online on its website; and to sell reprints singly or as part of topic portfolios. Contributors are asked to cite LOGOS in any further use they make of their contributed articles.
The members of the Editorial Board suggest topics and recommend contributors; review manuscripts; and are themselves contributors. The Board represent a wide spread of nationality and profession.
LOGOS follows normal editorial practices and now requires that manuscripts be submitted as standard word-processing documents, preferably in Word, sent by . The source of quotations should be given in the text whenever possible.
LOGOS will append end notes where necessary, adding references to the page of the LOGOS article on which the quotation appears, but will not use in the article itself superscript numbers or symbols for citations. Reading lists and lists of sources (with URLs when useful) are welcome where appropriate for placement at the end of an article.
In copy editing, usage and spelling, LOGOS follows the conventions of the country in which the author resides. For articles following British style, we generally follow New Hart's Rules: The Handbook of Style for Writers and Editors (Oxford University Press, 2005); and for articles following American style, The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition (The University of Chicago Press, 2003). A copy of our in-house style sheet is available to contributors.
Page proofs are emailed to contributors as PDFs for final checking. Contributors are asked to supply biographical notes and a head-and-shoulders portrait photograph preferably in electronic form.
After publication, contributors receive a copy of the issue in which their articles appear and a dozen offprints of their articles. They may also request a PDF copy of their articles. Additional copies of offprints may also be ordered. Contributors are entitled to a one-year subscription at half-price.
